Cloudcroft, New Mexico, a Quaint Mountain Village

March 1, 2013 in Blog

Whether you’re a local or just spending some badly needed vacation time in Cloudcroft, Cloudcroft offers a quaint mountain village experience that’s great for unwinding from the grind and pressure of a bigger city. From the trading posts and restaurants on Burro Avenue to the hiking trails of the surrounding Sacramento Mountains, there’s lots of ways to recharge your mental, physical, and spiritual batteries."cloudcroft new mexico" "new mexico" burro avenue

If you’re visiting Cloudcroft for the first time, you’ll definitely want to make a stop at the Sacramento Mountains Historical Museum and Pioneer Village. Here you’ll find how our little town got its start as a projected lumber source that quickly turned into a vacation spot. That was in the late 19th century, and we’ve been attracting people looking for a mountain getaway ever since. The museum’s historical exhibits contain a startling collection of early Cloudcroft artifacts, and you can stroll through the pioneer village to get a feel "cloudcroft new mexico" "new mexico" historical museumof what life was like for the founders of our town. You can even hold events at the chapel; if you are looking for a unique and beautiful site for a wedding, the chapel is a wonderful venue.

Along with fantastic natural scenery and friendly locals, the Historical Museum is just one of many attractions that make a stay in Cloudcroft a nice break from your daily routine. If you’re looking for a spring or summer getaway in southern New Mexico, put Cloudcroft on your radar!

New Mexico Ski Vacation

December 17, 2012 in Blog

"ski cloudcroft" "new Mexico" vacationNow that the winter weather has finally made an appearance, the holidays finally feel like they’re in full swing. Christmas is about a week away, and it could very well be a white one; hopefully the snow cooperates and the sky dumps a ton of great powder on the slopes. After all, while I appreciate the snow in Cloudcroft because it’s beautiful, I also appreciate it because it’s fun.

Winter vacations in Cloudcroft are great when there’s a lot of powder on the mountain because we have access to several nearby ski resorts and we’re not too far from Ruidoso. Skiers and boarders are in for a treat—“America’s southernmost ski resort”, Ski Cloudcroft, is about a 10 minute drive from town, and it offers several great slopes for quick runs, making it perfect for half-day lift-tickets if you happen to sleep in. Ski Apache, about an hour up the road in Mescalero, is one of the top resorts in the country, with a wide variety of runs for all skill levels. While all the resorts have rentals available, you can also rent equipment from a number of outfitters in Cloudcroft, advantageous if you plan on skiing for a week.

Taking a week to enjoy winter sports in Cloudcroft is a fantastic way to spend some vacation time, and while there are plenty of great hotels and motels (and a Holiday Inn in Alamorgordo), you should really do it right and rent a cabin. Renting a cabin for your New Mexico ski vacation lets you live here for a little bit, rather than the compartmentalized short-term stay in a hotel room. Imagine "cloudcroft new mexico" winter vacationcoming home from a day of snowboarding and digging into the chili you’ve had simmering in the crockpot all day, maybe uncorking a bottle of wine or cracking open a few ice-cold beers, perhaps putting an ice cold beer on a swollen ankle or knee! When you and your family or a group of friends have a cabin for a week, you get a chance to really relax and hang out, rather than merely cramming into a room with two double beds and watching hotel cable until it’s time to get up and ski again.

The ski season in Cloudcroft, like anywhere else, is dependent on what the weather does, so when the snow arrives, you might as well live it up in a cabin, and enjoy the season to the max. Have a great Christmas and New Year! We hope to see you soon!

Holidays in Cloudcroft New Mexico

December 2, 2012 in Blog

Well, now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, have you started your diet or workout regimen? If you’re like the Amigo staff, you’ll probably start it… tomorrow. Just kidding! We’ll get around to it eventually, but with the holiday season in full swing, there’s so much shopping, baking, and visiting to do that the treadmill might get a little underused. That’s okay, because Christmas in Cloudcroft is plenty fun even if you end up with a few extra pounds or an inch or two on the waist.

One thing we look forward to at the beginning of every holiday season is the annual Lighted Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Burro Street. Burro Street is the scene for many of our little village’s seasonal events, but the Christmas Parade and the tree lighting are "christmas cloudcroft" "holidays in new mexico"by far the most spectacular.     This year, be sure to get a spot on Cloudcroft’s main drag by 7pm on Saturday, December 8th for the start of the parade—if you get there at 5pm, there will be refreshments available, too.

The tree lighting is one of the best parts, too. Your family members are welcome and encouraged to bring ornaments for the tree, and if you have young children, this is one of those great family memory moments you don’t want to miss. With the parade, the Christmas tree and all the caroling in between, the start of Cloudcroft’s holiday season is a must-do, and just another fun thing that makes living "holidays in cloudcroft" "new mexico vacation"or vacationing in Southern New Mexico truly spectacular.

And speaking of vacationing, if you’re from out of town and are looking for a winter vacation or getaway in Cloudcroft, don’t hesitate to give Amigo Realty a call. We have some cozy cabins and vacation homes for rent, lease and sale, and we’d love to meet you this holiday season.

Mountain Biking in Cloudcroft, New Mexico

September 28, 2012 in Blog

"mountain bike" mountains "new mexico" vacationLet’s say you’re thinking about planning a little New Mexico mountain vacation—renting a vacation cabin, sitting on the deck, maybe eating at a local restaurant… but what else? If you don’t live in Cloudcroft, you might wonder what there is to do in a little mountain village in southern New Mexico, besides look at some beautiful scenery and browse some fun boutiques. Well, of course there are some great hiking trails, and horseback riding, and you can also play golf at the Lodge Resort, but if you’re looking for a little excitement, Cloudcroft is close to a lot of great mountain biking run.

You’ll find eight trails that are nearby, ranging in skill level from super-easy to advanced; most of the eight are good for intermediate riders. Pumphouse Ridge, for example, is great for anyone who’s never tried the sport before, and if that’s you, you’ll want to save the High Altitude Racing Loop for "high altitude" cloudcroft vacation "mountain bike"when you’re a lot more experienced. Wills Canyon is another popular easy ride, and the Rim Trail is about thirty-two miles of some cool switchbacks and down-hill cruises that are great for the journeyman biker.

A great resource for mountain biking in Cloudcroft is the High Altitude Bike Shop. It has a ton of great gear for sale or rent, plus it offers regular riding groups, depending on the season. The folks at High Altitude can also set you up with disc golf supplies, too!

A Cloudcroft vacation is great for relaxing, but if you’re the type who doesn’t like to sit still for too long, you’ll find some thrills here, too. Call us if you’d like to rent a cabin and do some riding this fall!

Beat the Heat at Nine Thousand Feet

July 20, 2012 in Blog

Well, Rand McNally’s Rogue Riders came and went, and while Cloudcroft didn’t win Friendliest Small Town in America in Rand McNally’s Best of the Road rankings, we had a really great time hanging out with Rob and Jen, and from their videos, it looks like they had fun, too. And anyway, we don’t need an award hanging on the wall to know we’re friendly—it’s part of what makes our town great. Well, that and the weather.

We had recently met some North Texans who rented a vacation property in Cloudcroft from us, and they loved the fact that while Southern New Mexico is hot during the day, the temperature drops at night. The whole idea of needing a jacket on a summer night kind of blew their minds. If there’s one selling point (and there are many) for taking a vacation in Cloudcroft during the summer, it’s our "new mexico" "vacation home" summerfantastic weather. While people in Arizona and Texas sweat it out from morning ‘til midnight, we get to cool off at night. Our new Texan friends became big fans of sitting on the porch at night, breathing in the mountain air and sipping on chardonnay (and a Happy Camper beer), and they vowed to make Cloudcroft their new mid-summer getaway spot.

In other words, if you want to shake the summer torpor and beat the heat, you can’t go wrong with a weekend away in the mountains. If you’re looking for a summer getaway or a weekend vacation, give Amigo Realty a call—we’ll be happy to help you cool off.

Friendliest Small Town Welcome

June 23, 2012 in Blog

If you live in the Land of Enchantment, chances are you’ve heard about Cloudcroft, if for no other reason than that it’s a nice little New Mexico vacation destination, a nice little mountain town that’s fun to get away to on weekends. Outside of New Mexico, most people have no idea we’re here."Rand McNally" "Best of the road" "friendliest town" "new mexico"

That could change, however; on July 5, Rand McNally/USA Today’s two-person survey team is headed our way, in their mission to find the “Friendliest Small Town in America.” Bob and Jen, Rand McNally’s Rogue Riders, as they’re called, are part of Rand McNally’s Best of the Road, a site that finds the best parts of small town America, in order to help you make the most of your exploratory car trips. Through a series of blogs and YouTube videos, the team shares their experiences from all their stops, so when they arrive in Cloudcroft, chances are you might find yourself in a clip or two."rogue riders" "best of the road" "new mexico"

We’re very excited to be part of their 2012 Road Rally, so if you live here, be sure to give them a warm Cloudcroft welcome. One way to start is by liking their Facebook page and posting something fun; like anybody on a road trip, the Rogue Riders appreciate your enthusiasm and hospitality! Stay tuned for updates—if we’re named the Friendliest Small Town, get ready for even more visitors!

I can’t wait!

BAAM New Mexico Music Fest

June 12, 2012 in Blog

"BAMM music festival"There’s no denying that Cloudcroft is a small mountain town, and certainly, being a quaint little village is one of the main reasons why I love where I live so much—the peace, the quiet, the serenity of being outdoors with nature makes this place really special. But sometimes, a little bit of loud noise is great, which is why I’m excited about the third annual Badass Mountain Music Fest June 15th and 16th!

The BAMM fest, held at the Ski Cloudcroft ski resort Friday evening and all day Saturday has a great line up of rock, folk, hip hop, and a whole lot more; with the exception of El Paso’s The Hillside Gamblers and The Lusitania, all the bands are born and bred here in New Mexico, including Cloudcroft’s own Electric Bones—Cloudcroft may not be Austin, Seattle, or L.A., but we like to rock a little bit, too!

In addition to the music, mountain bikers can take advantage of Ski Cloudcroft’s chairlifts to get to the top of the runs and then blast down to the bottom; you can ride the chairlifts up and down, too, even if you’re not at all keen on racing down a mountain on a bicycle. You can also camp during the weekend, but get there early, since the spots are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All in all, the BAMM Fest is just another great get-together in the Cloudcroft community, and it’s one more fun event that makes our town such a great little vacation destination.

Memorial Day Celebrations

May 23, 2012 in Blog

"memorial day"

Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and with it is Cloudcroft’s annual Mayfair! On May 26th and 27th, just about everyone in town (not to mention many more folks from all over) heads to Zenith Park for two days of art, food, and fun. If the weather guessers got close this week, we should have some great temps in the ‘70s; I guess it’s just another perk of mountain living—when spring rolls around, you get spring temps! In any event, I’m just glad our little community has such a fun event every year to look forward to.

What’s really interesting to me is that people come to Mayfair from miles around—even from as far away as Santa Fe and El Paso. Sure, they’re probably relatives visiting for the weekend, but I like to think that Cloudcroft and the Sacramento mountains offer these out-of-"cloudcroft new mexico" "cloudcroft in the spring"town visitors a great vacation destination; after all, Cloudcroft was founded in part because of its scenery, and taking in the sights on a gorgeous spring weekend might make it tough to leave.

If you are from out-of-town and find yourself falling in love with our little village, get in touch with us, because we’d love to welcome you into our community and show you some real estate.

Happy Memorial Day!

Spring is in Full Swing in the Mountains

April 8, 2012 in Blog

"hummingbird" cloudcroft new mexicoOne of my favorite things about the small-town life in mountain country is the wildlife, and now that spring is in swing, the birds, bees, bugs and everything else that’s been hiding out all winter are all busy living. Heading to the mountains amid all that beautiful flora and fauna is a great way to relax and recharge, and if you’re a bird watcher, Cloudcroft is a haven for your hobby.

New Mexico has over 520 different species of birds, and you can find many of them in and around Cloudcroft. From grosbeaks finches to warblers to pygmy nuthatch robins, Cloudcroft practically rings with birdsong. It also hums with the tiny wings of hummingbirds—these brightly colored little guys are all over the place, and if you don’t have a feeder or some flowers near your window, you’re really missing out on a lot of visits from some beautiful birds. Our friends at The Bird House have some cute bird houses, and they’re pretty easy to make on your own—in fact, building a bird "the bird house" cloudcroft new mexico birdshouse makes for a fun family project, especially if you’re spending a weekend or week at a vacation cabin with the kids or grandkids. When you live and play in a small town, the little things are what really make it worth it, whether it’s the buzz of bees in a flower garden or the flashy aerobatics of a hummingbird at your window. Come visit Cloudcroft and see how nature makes our little town such a great little secret!

Spring has Sprung in the Cloudcroft

When you’re buying a vacation home, one thing you should consider is the surrounding community. If you’re retired and are looking for peace and quiet, you wouldn’t want a house in New Orleans, no matter how good the deal. If your potential new home is off the beaten path, how far are you willing to drive for activities? If you’re looking for an annual ski retreat, will you use the house in the summer? golf "the lodge" cloudcroft

As far as Cloudcroft goes, I think it offers a wide variety of family-friendly things to do year round—you might be looking for a ski lodge during the winter, but Cloudcroft also offers a nice little weekend retreat when the weather warms up. The village itself is alive with art galleries and artisan shops, as well as several fine restaurants and bars, plus some good ol’ fashioned diners. Then there’s the great outdoors—Lincoln National Forest holds some fantastic hiking and biking trails and has plenty of campsites, and for the golfer in your family, there’s the course at the Lodge Resort.

If the rest of your family isn’t that into playing 18 holes, there’s always something going on in town—coming up April 7 is the Kiwanis Easter Egg hunt at Zenith park, not to mention June’s Mountain Music Festival, and the B.A.M.M. Festival Father’s Day weekend, if your kids are a little older and can handle a concert that runs a bit later. The Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce’s website is a great source for upcoming events, especially if you’re planning a specific weekend to get away.

All in all, a home-away-from-home should be one you get to use no matter what the season. We’d love for you to be part of our little community all year long!
